Cologne Celtics 2024: Our Year

2024 was another incredible year for the Cologne Celtics GAA Club. Tournament victories – including the German Hurling Cup! – a trip to Ireland, incredible developments in Gaelic football, LGFA and camogie, rivalries renewed, friendships made, and many, many battles across Europe. In this article, our chairperson, Laura Kennedy, looks back at what was another great year for the club.

From Cologne to Limerick – the Long-Awaited Return Trip to Monagea – October 2024

Two months ago, a few Celts made their way to the Emerald Isle, specifically Monagea in West Limerick. Home of one of our coaches and the most passionate person when it comes to hurling that I know (personally, at least), Frank. After he brought his home club over to Cologne for the first edition of our now-annual Francie O’Connor Cup, the time had come to pay the return visit.

Hurling and Camogie Development Day 2024 – October 26th

On Saturday, October 26th, Cologne Celtics welcomed Adrian Clancy to our pitch in Chorweiler, just north of Cologne, for a day’s intensive training. Organised by the GGE, the event’s logic was to get a high-profile hurling and camogie coach to not only train the players there on the day but also encourage and educate all the coaches and potential coaches present in order to further develop the GAA across Europe.

On Saturday, March 16th, we held the second edition of the Francie O’Connor Cup competition in Bezirkssportanlage, Chorweiler. It was a busy day as we had six hurling teams – Cologne, Rhineland Gaels, Eindhoven, Leuven, Darmstadt and Annaghdown from Galway, Ireland – and three camogie teams with Eindhoven, Leuven and a Cologne/Darmstadt mix. Annaghdown (hurling) and Eindhoven (camogie) proved to be worthy winners in the end.

Francie O’Connor Hurling Cup Preview: Saturday, 16th March 2024 Chorweiler, Cologne

Save the Date! On St. Patrick’s Weekend (Saturday, 16th March), the Cologne Celtics GAA Club is back in hurling and camogie action with the second Francie O’Connor Hurling Cup.

We will be playing at Bezirkssportanlange Chorweiler (Merianstraße 5, 50769 Köln). The event is free to attend and is open to the whole family.

Save the date! On 19 August 2023, the Cologne Celtics Gaelic Sports Club will host our first-ever Family Day. It will take place from 11am until 3pm. This event is free and open to non-club members as well as members. It promises to be a day full of fun and action for the whole family ⭐️

FRS GAA World Games 2023: Meet Our Players

This year, 2023, the FRS GAA World Games makes a return, and this time, it is being held in County Derry. Amongst all these players is a significant group from the Cologne Celtics. Here we had a chat with several of our players.

Cologne Celtics on TV „Cluiche as Baile“ – TG4, Thursday, June 1st 2023.

Save the date, Thursday, June 1st, at 10:30pm (CET) or 9:30pm (Irish time) as the Cologne Celtics GAA Club will make their Irish television debut. The Celtics will feature in the new documentary, „Cluiche as Baile“ („The Away Game“), produced by the highly-talented Desmond Bros. The documentary will highlight the work and craic involved in playing GAA in Europe. The German Cup 2022, which we hosted back in September last year, will be one of the centrepieces of the documentary.

A Celt at the BayArena: Bayer Leverkusen’s Lisburn Lad

Gareth Houston, our club Social and Social Media Officer, found his dream job last year, when he was given the chance to work for his German club – Bayer Leverkusen 04. This is the story of how a lad from Lisburn became a stadium tour guide at the BayArena and why you should do a stadium tour, even if you are not a hardcore football fan.

St. Patrick’s Weekend Invitational Hurling Tournament: Saturday, 18th March 2023

On Saturday, 18th March 2023, the Cologne Celtics GAA Club will face off in our St. Patrick’s Weekend Hurling Invitational Tournament. With opposition from Ireland, the Netherlands and our local rivals Düsseldorf, we are looking forward to a massive day of hurling action.

A Celt at the Irish Embassy, November 5th 2022

On November 5th, 2022 the Cologne Celtics were represented at the Biennial Meeting of German-Irish Societies and Irish Cultural Organisations for the first time. Here we could present our club to other groups around Germany, and develop connections with them. This article is about what happened during the day.
