„The Biennial Meeting of German-Irish Societies and Irish Cultural Organisations“ took place on November 5th at the Irish Embassy in Berlin.
This year, the Cologne Celtics were invited to attend the meeting and also present ourselves as a model for Club Promotion, Recruitment and Retention in terms of bringing in and keeping new members involved in the club. It is no secret that our club has grown exponentially in recent years, with club membership almost doubling since 2020, and we had the chance to showcase our approach to other groups and societies.

We were delighted when, in October, our club received an invite to the meeting. Having met the Irish Ambassador, Dr. Nicholas O’Brien, at the Monheimer Frühlingsfest and one of the main event organisers, David McDonnell, at the German Camogie and Hurling Cups in Cologne (he was our guest of honour), we knew that this would be a meeting worth attending. Our chairperson, Oisín, went to represent the club there.
It is a long journey from Bonn to Berlin, but it was more than worth it, as we had the chance to meet representatives from organisations in the world of business, law, the Irish language, culture and sport, among others. We will list the organisations and their contact details at the end of this article.
The event was very well organised by the Embassy and getting to know each other was very valuable. We look forward to future collaborations with them. We have seen first-hand in the past how we can achieve more by working with other groups in the area, as evidenced by the invaluable support we received from the Städtepartnerschaft Köln-Cork e.V. during our Cork Trip in October 2022.
Our experience of growth following the pandemic has unfortunately not been experienced by every organisation present. In many ways, we are lucky that sport and physical activity were some of the central tenets of life missed during the pandemic. Our club offers that and much more. We were able to share the success of using our club website and social media to engage with a broader audience and recruit new members.
For this purpose, we were invited to sit on a panel with representatives from other GAA clubs in Germany, namely Sinéad Kavanagh from Setanta Berlin GAA and Arthur Sullivan from Berlin GAA.
We only had a limited time to share some of our strategies, and we primarily highlighted some of our online successes. However, we have implemented other recruitment strategies as well. Therefore, if anyone involved with such groups wants to chat with us about them or would like to share some of theirs with us, we are ready to share and listen.
During the meeting, we learned about the different organisations, societies and clubs; we were introduced to the German-Irish Council, we learned about the Bürgerfest, Frankfurt Irish Festival and Munich St. Patrick’s Day Parade and collaborated together in workshops around club promotions. We also heard from Matt English, CEO of Special Olympics, Ireland, who was the guest speaker – ahead of the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin this year.
Afterwards, we went from the Embassy to the Ambassador’s Residence for a meal and further opportunities to make connections. Overall, it was a great success, and we are looking forward to building on it and more meetings in the future.

Am 5. November fand in der irischen Botschaft in Berlin „The Biennial Meeting of German-Irish Societies and Irish Cultural Organisations“ statt.
In diesem Jahr waren die Cologne Celtics eingeladen, an dem Treffen teilzunehmen. Wir stellten unsere Ansätze zur Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Mitgliederanwerbung und zum Halten von Mitgliedern vor, die bisher sehr gut funktioniert haben. Unser Club ist in den letzten Jahren exponentiell gewachsen, die Mitgliederzahl hat sich seit 2020 fast verdoppelt, und wir hatten die Möglichkeit, anderen Gruppen und Vereinen unseren Ansätzen vorzustellen.
Natürlich kannst du auch Teil unserer Mannschaft sein, indem du dich uns anschließt; bitte kontaktiere uns direkt, wenn du ein sportlerisches oder soziales Mitglied der Cologne Celtics werden möchtest.
Wir haben uns sehr gefreut, als unser Club im Oktober eine Einladung zu diesem Treffen erhielt. Nachdem wir den irischen Botschafter, Dr. Nicholas O’Brien, auf dem Monheimer Frühlingsfest und einen der Hauptorganisatoren, David McDonnell, bei den German Camogie and Hurling Cups in Köln getroffen hatten, wussten wir, dass es sich lohnen würde, an diesem Treffen teilzunehmen. Unser Vorsitzender Oisín fuhr hin, um den Club dort zu vertreten.
Es ist eine lange Reise von Bonn nach Berlin, aber sie hat sich mehr als gelohnt! Wir hatten dort die tolle Gelegenheit, Vertreter von Organisationen aus der Welt der Wirtschaft, der irischen Sprache, der Kultur und des Sports zu treffen.
Die Veranstaltung wurde von der Botschaft sehr gut organisiert und das gegenseitige Kennenlernen war sehr wertvoll. Wir freuen uns auf die künftige Zusammenarbeit mit vielen von ihnen. Wir haben in der Vergangenheit aus eigener Erfahrung gemerkt, wie wir durch die Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Gruppen in der Region mehr erreichen können, wie die unschätzbare Unterstützung beweist, die wir von der Städtepartnerschaft Köln-Cork e.V. während unseres Cork-Trips im Oktober 2022 erhalten haben.
Unsere Erfahrung des Wachstums nach der Pandemie wurde leider nicht von allen anwesenden Organisationen gemacht. In vielerlei Hinsicht haben wir das Glück, dass Sport zu den zentralen Bestandteilen des Lebens gehört, die während der Pandemie vermisst wurden. Unser Verein bietet das und noch viel mehr. Wir konnten den Erfolg unserer Club-Website und der sozialen Medien nutzen, um ein breiteres Publikum anzusprechen und neue Mitglieder zu finden.
Zu diesem Zweck wurden wir eingeladen, an einer Podiumsdiskussion mit Vertretern anderer GAA-Clubs in Deutschland teilzunehmen, nämlich Sinéad Kavanagh von Setanta Berlin GAA und Arthur Sullivan von Berlin GAA.
Wir hatten nur eine begrenzte Zeit, um einige unserer Strategien vorzustellen, und haben dabei vor allem einige unserer Online-Erfolge hervorgehoben. Wir haben aber auch andere Erfolge erzielt. Wenn also jemand, der mit solchen Gruppen zu tun hat, mit uns darüber sprechen oder uns von seinen Erfolgen berichten möchte, tauschen wir uns sehr gerne dazu aus.
Während des Treffens lernten wir die verschiedenen Organisationen, Gesellschaften und Clubs kennen; wir wurden dem German-Irish Council vorgestellt, erfuhren etwas über das Bürgerfest, das Frankfurt Irish Festival und die Munich St. Patrick’s Day Parade und arbeiteten gemeinsam in Workshops über Club Promotion. Wir hörten auch eine Rede von Matt English, CEO von Special Olympics, Irland, der als Gastredner auftrat – im Vorfeld der Special Olympics World Games in Berlin im nächsten Jahr.
Anschließend gingen wir von der Botschaft zur Residenz des Botschafters, wo wir zu Abend aßen und weitere Kontakte knüpfen konnten. Insgesamt war es ein großer Erfolg, und wir freuen uns darauf, darauf aufzubauen und in Zukunft weitere Treffen zu organisieren.
