Prior to the beginning of anti-Covid-19 measures, the Cologne Celtics held three Pop-Up Gaeltachts in Cologne (2) and in Bonn (1). A “Gaeltacht” is an area in Ireland where Irish Gaelic (Gaeilge) is traditionally the first language and they can primarily be found in the west of Ireland (Kerry, Donegal, Galway, West Cork and Mayo) although there are others spread around the country in parts of Waterford and Meath. A “Pop-Up” Gaeltacht is a more modern innovation, whereby a pub becomes a Gaeltacht for the evening. This type of Gaeltacht can be found in more urban areas across Ireland such as in Dublin, Cork and Belfast, but also around the world in New York, Brussels, in cities in Australia and generally wherever the Irish go. There have been an estimated 150 events outside of Ireland.
We have had two Pop-Up Gaeltachts in Jameson’s Irish Pub in Cologne and one in the James Joyce Pub in Bonn. During both events some regulars with their enthusiastic faces turned up as we started to gather a dedicated crew of Gaeilgeoirí, but encouragingly we found new learners as well. The event in Bonn was our biggest as we were able to find keen speakers and those with interest from around the area. Our plan was to continue moving between Bonn and Cologne for these events and we had hoped for one every month / month and a half until Corona changed the situation for us… However, knowing that there is a dedicated audience and an active Gaeilge WhatsApp chat ensures that once our social lives can continue, we will be back at it.

Pop-Up Gaeltachtaí agus na Cologne Celtics
Ag tús na bliana 2020 bhí trí Phop-Up Gaeltacht againn, idir Cologne agus Bonn. Bhí an deis againn ár gcuid Gaeilge a úsáid agus bhí deis ag daoine gan Gaeilge beagáinín a fhoghlaim. Is rud tabhachtach é ár dteanga a choimead beo agus chun deis a thabhairt do dhaoine ár dteanga dhúchais a labhairt. Leis an bPop-Up Gaeltacht is féidir é sin a dhéanamh.
Is mór an trua é gur tharla coivid ag an am seo, mar bhí a lán fuinnimh sa ghrúpa agus bhí a lán suime ag daoine i níos mó Pop-Ups. Bhí slua mór againn i mBonn le haghaidh ár bPop-Up dheireaneach agus bhí an-spraoi againn. Cheap mé go mbeadh sé nó seacht gcinn eile againn i 2020 ach níor tharla siad. Ag an am gcéanna tá a fhios againn go bhfuil suim ag daoine sa cheantar agus nuair a bheimid abalta cinn eile a dhéanamh, beimid ag leanúint leo.
Mar club CLG ba mhaith linn ról láirneach a thógaint chun ár dteanga dhúchais a choimead beo agus gan í a chaillúint cé go bhfuilimid inár gcónaí thar lear. Is linn í agus má tá daoine anseo a bhfuil suim acu Gaeilge a labhairt nó a fhoghlaim is féidir linn sin a spreagadh. Nílimid ach ag tosú leis an gceangail seo idir na Cologne Celtics agus an Ghaeilge faoi láthair, ach sa todhcaí beimid ag éirí níos laidre de réir a chéile.

Pop-Up Gaeltachts und die Cologne Celtics
Vor dem Beginn der Covid-19-Maßnahmen haben die Cologne Celtics drei Pop-Up Gaeltachts in Köln (2) und in Bonn (1) veranstaltet. Eine „Gaeltacht“ ist ein Gebiet in Irland, in dem irisches Gälisch (Gaeilge) traditionell die erste Sprache ist. Man findet sie vor allem im Westen Irlands (Kerry, Donegal, Galway, West Cork und Mayo), obwohl es auch andere über das Land verteilt in Bereichen von Waterford und Meath gibt. Eine „Pop-Up“ Gaeltacht ist eine modernere Innovation, bei der ein Pub für einen Abend zu einer Gaeltacht wird. Diese Art von Gaeltacht findet man in eher städtischen Gebieten Irlands wie Dublin, Cork und Belfast, aber auch weltweit in New York, Brüssel, in Städten in Australien und generell überall dort, wo die Iren hingehen. Es hat schätzungsweise 150 Veranstaltungen außerhalb von Irland gegeben.
Wir hatten bereits zwei Pop-Up Gaeltachts in Jameson’s Irish Pub in Köln und eine im James Joyce Pub in Bonn. Bei beiden Veranstaltungen kamen einige der gleichen begeisterten Menschen, da wir begannen, eine engagierte Gruppe von Gaeilgeoirí zu versammeln, aber ermutigenderweise fanden wir auch neue Leute. Die Veranstaltung in Bonn war unsere größte, da wir begeisterte Sprecher aus der Umgebung finden konnten. Unser Plan war es, für diese Veranstaltungen weiterhin zwischen Bonn und Köln zu wechseln, und wir hatten auf eine pro Monat / anderthalb Monate gehofft, bis Corona die Situation für uns änderte… Aber, jetzt wissen wir, dass mit einem begeisterten Publikum und einen aktiven Gaeilge WhatsApp-Chat, stellt sicher, dass wir wieder dabei sein werden, sobald unser soziales Leben weitergehen kann.
