On Saturday, September 23rd, three Cologne Celtics players represented the club at a Gaelic Football tournament designed for „developing players and clubs“. Our players were Niall, Anto and Michael, and they were ably supported by our chairperson, Laura. In the following report, we hear about how the day developed, and Michael shares his experience of playing in a Gaelic Football tournament for the first time.

Tournament Report by Laura Kennedy
The players at the tournament from clubs in Cologne, Maastricht, Leuven and Nijmegen were a mix of veteran players and people playing their first game, like Michael. Many of the students and Erasmus players on the Dutch and Belgian teams were giving Gaelic a go, having played rugby in New Zealand, Aussie rules in Australia, or soccer in Italy or Spain.
The three Kölsche Jungs traded the red and white Cologne jersey for the red of Maastricht and were joined by 6 of the Maastricht players to play Nijmegen. Two borrowed players from Leuven completed the Maastricht/Cologne lineup for this game.
New Niall jumped his goal for the first half, the position he played when his school team famously won the Bunscoil Comórtas 2009. Michael played in midfield, and Anto took a corner-forward position. They were down by a couple of points at halftime. Niall made his way out to midfield for the second half, and a really close game ended with a win for Nijmegen by a couple of points.
The second game was against Leuven, and Nijmegen offered a few players to give tired legs a chance to recover on the sideline. Leuven had the home advantage, with a much bigger panel of players, meaning they had an endless supply of fresh legs and loud support from the sideline, adding to the challenge. Niall returned to his goalkeeper position. Cologne/Maastricht managed to get level in the second half, having been down at halftime, but Leuven’s energy could not be matched, and an unlucky missed goal chance meant we couldn’t get ahead, and once again, Leuven crept ahead.
The lads fought to the end and enjoyed the competitive spirit. Although they did not make it to the final, they were able to enjoy some beers on the sideline and watch Nijmegen and Leuven battle it out. We are looking forward to hosting the Developmental Gaelic Football Round in Cologne on 21.10.
Michael’s Experience of his First Gaelic Football Tournament
Last weekend I had the opportunity to participate in my first Gaelic Football tournament in Leuven, and I would like to share my impressions with you. The anticipation for the tournament was already high, as it was a first for me in this exciting sport.
The day started early, and the excitement was palpable as we made our way to the tournament site. Finally, I would have the opportunity to compete in a real match and experience the intensity of the game in a real match situation. It was remarkable how the flow and intensity of the game increased compared to training, and the larger number of players on the field led to an even more realistic feeling.
For me personally, it was an opportunity to test my own skills and find out what aspects I still needed to work on. Which position suited me best? Where did I feel most confident? This tournament gave me the opportunity to prove myself outside of training and try out different game situations.
But the tournament was more than just a sporting competition. It was also about community and togetherness. We were surrounded by Gaelic Games all day long, and it was fantastic to spend time with the members of our club. But getting to know players from other teams was also a highlight. We shared experiences and made connections within the wider Gaelic Games community in Europe. It was a chance to look beyond our own club and see how big and diverse this sport really is.
Overall, the tournament in Leuven was an unforgettable experience, full of fun and community spirit. I am already looking forward to the next tournament and gaining even more experience in this exciting sport. Gaelic football has definitely found a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait to get back on the field and develop my skills.

Die Teilnehmer des Turniers aus Cologne, Maastricht, Leuven und Nijmegen waren eine Mischung aus erfahrenen Spielern und solchen, die wie Michael zum ersten Mal spielten. Viele der Studenten und Erasmus-Spieler in den niederländischen und belgischen Teams hatten zuvor Rugby in Neuseeland, Aussie Rules in Australien oder Fußball in Italien oder Spanien gespielt und probierten nun Gälisch aus.
Die drei Kölsche Jungs tauschten das rot-weiße Celtics Trikot gegen das rote von Maastricht und wurden von 6 Spielern aus Maastricht unterstützt, um gegen Nijmegen zu spielen. Zwei Leihspieler aus Leuven vervollständigten die Maastrichter/Celtics Aufstellung für dieses Spiel.
Niall spielte in der ersten Halbzeit ins Tor, die Position, die er spielte, als seine Schulmannschaft das berühmte Bunscoil Comórtas 2009 gewann. Michael spielte im Mittelfeld und Anto übernahm die Position eines Corner-Forwards. Zur Halbzeit lagen sie mit ein paar Punkten zurück. Niall rückte in der zweiten Halbzeit ins Mittelfeld vor, und ein wirklich enges Spiel endete mit einem Sieg für Nimwegen mit ein paar Punkten Vorsprung.
Im zweiten Spiel ging es gegen Leuven, und Nijmegen bot einige Spieler auf, um den müden Beinen an der Seitenlinie eine Chance zur Erholung zu geben. Leuven hatte den Heimvorteil und verfügte über ein weitaus größeres Aufgebot an Spielern, was bedeutete, dass sie immer frische Beine und lautstarke Unterstützung von der Seitenlinie hatten, was die Herausforderung noch vergrößerte.
Niall kehrte auf seine Torhüterposition zurück. Cologne/Maastricht gelang es, nach dem Rückstand zur Halbzeit in der zweiten Halbzeit den Ausgleich zu erzielen, aber Leuven konnten ihre Energie nicht aufbringen, und eine unglücklich vergebene Torchance sorgte dafür, dass wir nicht in Führung gehen konnten, so dass Leuven erneut in Führung gingen.
Die Jungs kämpften bis zum Schluss und genossen den Kampfgeist. Auch wenn sie es nicht ins Finale geschafft haben, konnten sie am Spielfeldrand ein paar Bierchen trinken und dabei zusehen, wie Nimwegen und Leuven gegeneinander antraten. Wir freuen uns darauf, Gastgeber für die Developmental Gaelic Football Round in Köln am 21.10. zu sein.
Michaels Erfahrungen bei seinem ersten Gaelic-Football-Turnier
Am vergangenen Wochenende hatte ich die Gelegenheit, an meinem ersten Gaelic Football Turnier in Leuven teilzunehmen, und ich möchte gerne meine Eindrücke mit euch teilen. Schon die Vorfreude auf das Turnier war groß, da es für mich eine Premiere in dieser aufregenden Sportart war.
Der Tag begann früh, und die Aufregung war förmlich spürbar, als wir uns auf den Weg zum Turnierplatz machten. Endlich würde ich die Gelegenheit haben, in einem richtigen Wettkampf anzutreten und die Intensität des Spiels in einer echten Spielsituation zu erleben. Es war bemerkenswert, wie sich der Spielfluss und die Intensität im Vergleich zum Training steigerten, und die größere Anzahl an Spielern auf dem Feld führte zu einem noch realistischeren Gefühl.
Für mich persönlich war es eine Gelegenheit, meine eigenen Fähigkeiten zu testen und herauszufinden, an welchen Aspekten ich noch arbeiten musste. Welche Position lag mir am besten? Wo fühlte ich mich am sichersten? Dieses Turnier bot mir die Möglichkeit, mich außerhalb des Trainings zu beweisen und verschiedene Spielsituationen auszuprobieren.
Doch das Turnier war mehr als nur ein sportlicher Wettkampf. Es ging auch um die Gemeinschaft und das Miteinander. Den ganzen Tag lang waren wir von Gaelic Games umgeben, und es war fantastisch, Zeit mit den Mitgliedern unseres Clubs zu verbringen. Aber auch das Kennenlernen von Spielern aus anderen Teams war ein Highlight. Wir tauschten Erfahrungen aus und knüpften Verbindungen innerhalb der größeren Gaelic Games Community in Europa. Es war eine Möglichkeit, über den Tellerrand unseres eigenen Clubs hinauszublicken und zu sehen, wie groß und vielfältig diese Sportart tatsächlich ist.
Insgesamt war das Turnier in Leuven ein unvergessliches Erlebnis, das von Spaß und Gemeinschaftsgefühl geprägt war. Ich freue mich bereits auf das nächste Turnier und darauf, noch mehr Erfahrungen in dieser aufregenden Sportart zu sammeln. Gaelic Football hat definitiv einen besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen gefunden, und ich kann es kaum erwarten, wieder auf dem Feld zu stehen und meine Fähigkeiten weiterzuentwickeln.
